William Francis Card

William (Bill) passed away peacefully at his home on June 2, 2023. Bill was born on March 16, 1949, in Clinton, IA, to LeRoy and Helen Card, and was raised in Camanche and Folletts, IA.

Bill graduated from Camanche High School in 1967 and then graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1971 with a degree in Social Work. After moving to Kansas City, MO, and working for a few years, he attended the University of Missouri – Kansas City where he received a graduate degree in Public Administration.

Bill moved to Chicago in 1983 to work for The Joint Commission, did some consulting, and then began a career with the Chicago Department of Public Health managing the city’s public health clinics. He retired in 2010 and eventually moved full-time to Indiana in 2011 where he lived the remainder of his life.

Bill loved tending to his girls (the chickens), gardening, canning and giving away the fruits of his labor, raising his bees, giving his time to the church and community, 30’s - 40’s style music, attending Opera performances at The Lyric, and being around people. He loved to travel, especially spending time in Italy.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and brother-in-law (Gary & Donna Beyer), and his sisters-in-law (Shirley Card & Emily L Smith).

Bill is survived by his husband, David M. Lewis; a son, Damon (Donna Weinberg) Card; three grandchildren, Sydney, Tyler, and Lauren; a sister, Dana Newman (Ron); two brothers, Bob Card and Boyd Card (Mary Jo); a brother-in-law, George Smith; his two dogs, Lucy & Molly; and many nieces, nephews, their spouses, children, and cousins.

Bill was also blessed with five bonus nieces (Thuy An, Phuong Anh, Minh An, Moonbeam, and Pumpkin) and their spouses and children (Thien, Alex, Danny, Adam, Lyndon, Jimmy, Lily, Amanda, Aaron, Alan, Ethan, and Emerson Grace).

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations be made in Bill’s name to Episcopal Church of the Mediator (www.mediatorharbert.com), Neighbor-by-Neighbor (www.neighborbyneighbor.org), or your favorite charity. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 13, at The Episcopal Church of the Mediator, 14280 Red Arrow Highway, Harbert, MI (www.mediatorharbert.com). Visitation is from 12 Noon – 1 PM  with the service beginning at 1 PM. A reception will follow at the church. Note: Times listed are in Eastern Daylight-Saving time.

In true “Bill fashion” and always thinking of others, he asked that people who attend the service bring a canned good or non-perishable food item which will be donated to Neighbor-by Neighbor. Boxes will be available at the church for your donation.

Arrangements are entrusted to Pike Funeral and Cremation Services, The Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Highway, Bridgman.
