Vern Edward Nitz, 81, of Baroda passed away on January 8, 2011at The Timbers of Cass County, Dowagiac, Michigan.

A memorial service will be held 11 AM Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 9193 Cleveland Avenue, Baroda, with Reverend Kenneth Babcock officiating. Friends may meet with the family on Tuesday from 5-8 PM at Pike Funeral Home, Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Hwy., Bridgman. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be given to St. John’s Lutheran Church or Berrien County Cancer Service.

Vern was born August 7, 1929 in Baroda, Michigan, the son of the late Edward and Hertha (Schlutt) Nitz. On November 5, 1949, he married Doris Ott. He worked at Whirlpool Corporation for over 40 years and enjoyed the out-of-doors - fishing, hunting and farming.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Doris; his children - Verne Nitz of Bridgman, Deborah (Dennis) Barker of Paw Paw, Rick (Kathy) Nitz of Baroda, Allyn Nitz of Baroda; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; five sisters - Betty (Walter) Lausman of Florida, Ellen Hughes of Georgia, Marylyn Nitz of St. Joseph, Bonnie (Ernest) Boldt of Baroda, Janis (William) Fleisher of Baroda; Doris’s family - Don Ott of Stevensville, Lynn (Earl) Anderson of St. Johns, Clarence (Annette) Ott, Jr. of Bridgman, LaVera Lawrenz of Bridgman.
Vern was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law Kathy Nitz, October 12, 2007.
