Stephen Charles Jewell, 73, of Stevensville passed away on Sunday, January 17, 2021 at Woodland Terrace, Bridgman.
Steve was born August 22, 1947 in Benton Harbor, the son of the late Charles and Frances “Kay” (Barr) Jewell. He was baptized at the First Congregational Church in St. Joseph on May 9, 1948. Steve attended the original two-room Evans School in south St. Joseph, where he met his lifelong friend Stan Sacha. He was a 1965 graduate of Lakeshore High School, where he played football and basketball for the Lancers and tenor saxophone in the band. In 1969, he graduated from Albion College in Albion, Michigan, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. On August 9, 1975 Steve married Suzanne Marie Kramer. Steve started his career in journalism as a photographer, and enjoyed taking pictures all his life. He was News Editor for the Herald-Palladium newspaper for many years, retiring in 2015. Steve will always be remembered for his sense of humor and delight in family and small pleasures. He loved to spend time up north at the family cabin in Bear Lake, Michigan, fishing, waterskiing, and boating. Steve was a huge fan of the Michigan Wolverines and Albion College Britons.
Survivors include his wife: Suzanne Jewell; children: Joseph (Katie) Jewell and Elizabeth Jewell; three grandsons: Richard, Theodore and Elliott Jewell, to whom he was a loving and playful “Papa”; his sister: Kathy (Thomas) Myers; niece and nephew: Jayme and Ben Myers, to whom he was a funny and caring “Unk”; great nieces: Phoenix, Sonia and Sigourney; and sister-in-law: Barbara (Tal) Day.
A graveside service will be held at 1 pm, Friday, January 22, 2021 at Hickory Bluff Cemetery, Stevensville, with Pastor Jesse Knox of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Once family and friends can gather again safely, we will plan a larger celebration of Steve’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Albion College Men’s Basketball, 611 E.
