Sam Somora went to the Great Garden in the Sky on August 28 from his home in Baroda with the calling card of Sunshine Perennial Gardens.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM Thursday, September 1, at Pike Funeral Home, Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Highway, Bridgman, with Reverend Christopher Noffke officiating. Friends may meet with the family Wednesday, August 31 from 5-7 PM. Burial will be in Ruggles Cemetery, Baroda. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be given to Hospice at Home.
He began his journey in 1927 in Los Angeles, California. The family returned to Chicago where he was schooled until they moved to Baroda. He graduated from Baroda High School of which he spoke well and felt proud of the education he received. He was drafted on graduation day and served in Germany during WW2 as Battalion Sgt. Major. He returned home to graduate from the University of Chicago and began his broadcasting career. This phase of his journey took him to major cities in the mid-west where he met his wife, Shirley Beaver, and many friends, thus beginning another journey. They returned to Baroda and started Sunshine Perennial Gardens from a greenhouse he had built as a boy. His broad education enabled him to become a competent and creative plants-man and led to many good friends in the area. Unfortunately this last journey has taken him away from family and friends who will miss his quiet and gentle nature. He is survived by his wife and the families of six cousins and three brothers-in-law.
