Roger Carl Palm, 88, of Lakeside passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Kephart Cottage, Berrien Springs.
Roger was born February 24, 1921 in Superior, Wisconsin the son of the late Carl and Marie (Galgrud) Palm. He served in the US Marines during WWII and fought in the battle of Iwo Jima. He graduated in 1950 from the Northwestern University School of Music where he developed a lifelong love of jazz and classical music. He studied music with respect to each instrument, and eventually wrote a suite for a full orchestra, a sonatina for keyboards, and two lesson books, which were then published. In the early days, he played the accordion and piano at various locations in the Chicago area. He also operated a music studio in Evanston, Illinois, where he and his staff provided private lessons on a variety of musical instruments. In addition, he served as the Director of Music for the Morton Grove Public Schools for more than 20 years. In 1979 he left Illinois and the teaching phase of his career to spend more time at home in Lakeside with his family and friends. Roger was a loving husband and father. He clearly had a passion for music and would always honor requests to play the piano at special occasions and family gatherings. He loved to play golf and to follow his favorite baseball and football teams, including the Chicago Cubs and the Michigan Wolverines.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; two sons – James (Delora) Palm of Stevensville and Roger Palm of Seattle; two grandchildren – Brian (Danielle) Palm and Jennifer Palm; two great grandchildren, Charley and Zander.
Roger was preceded in death by a sister, Melba; and a brother, Kenneth.
