Robert Modro, 75, passed away at his home in Harbert, Mi. on March 18, 2013. Robert, known affectionately as "Muddy", or just "Bob", was born at home in Baroda to John and Katherine Modro on February 16, 1938. Bob loved Michigan, happy to work and live in Berrien county for all of his life. Michigan was also the backdrop for a rowdy Bob back in the day...home to many a story involving motorcycles, dune buggies, and more than a few youthful brawls. It was also where he met and fell in love with Marlene, whom he married on July 14, 1972. Marlene came with a ready made family of 4 children, whom he truly regarded as his own. They shared 37 years together until her death 3 years ago.
Bob was proud of his work as a foreman for the Berrien County Road Commission, and knew every nook and cranny in the area like the back of his hand. He knew just as many people, too. Bob was "old school": he believed in working hard, and providing and caring for his family. No surprise he loved watching old Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson movies. He was also that rare specimen: a man of his word, a man who would give you the shirt off his back if you were worthy. And, someone who could play a mean game of cribbage at the same time.
In earlier times, Bob's interests ranged from league bowling to tinkering in the garage with ongoing projects. He was always one to welcome a friend with a brew or two, as well. His gifted woodworking skills could rival any professional, with family members on the receiving end of a wide range of hand crafted items and holiday decor. He also enjoyed experimenting with photography. Later, when his mobility issues began to limit him, he liked to watch the birds and deer frolic from the serenity of his bay window. Other pleasures he looked forward to were the regular monthly breakfasts with his childhood buddies, and visits with family.
As his health declined, Bob was reluctant to give up his one treasure of spending time at White River Campground , or "up north." This special place in Montague, Mi., was where he and Marlene enjoyed summer after summer. A gathering spot for many celebrations, this area meant much to them and their loved ones. They made many enduring friendships there that sustained Bob through Marlene's death and other challenges.
Bob leaves behind brother Rudy (Needa) Modro of Hartford, sister Wilma (Erwin) Kruger of Coloma, stepchildren Marge (Bob) Proudfit of Osceola, In., Linda (Erick) Pifer of St. Joseph, David Lindsey of Three Oaks, Ellen (John) Cassidy of Sawyer, and grand kids Mindy, Melisa, Sean, Danny, Abby, and Drew.
There will be a memorial service honoring both Marlene and Bob, to take place Saturday, March 30th, 1:00 pm, at Pike Funeral Home, Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Hwy., Bridgman. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be addressed to the Area Agency on Aging, or to the family, with a portion of those funds designated for a memory garden/beautification project within White River Campground.
