Bob was born on April 24, 1923 in Utica, New York to the late Bronislaw and Benigna Meszko. He received his B.A. in music from Northwestern University in 1946 and his Master's degree in music from the University of Michigan in 1952. Bob taught instrumental music to elementary school students in Kirkwood, MO and Flint, Michigan for a total of 49 years, played both violin and viola in the Flint Symphony Orchestra and gave private music lessons on Saturday. He retired from teaching in 1995.
Bob married Frances Marie Becker, a second grade teacher and a pianist, in 1948. His beloved wife died of cancer in 1961 when the youngest of their four children was one year old and he never remarried. He put all four children through college. Survivors include: brothers Raymond and Richard of Syracuse, NY; sons William (Melissa), of Ft. Worth, Texas; Robert Jr. (Nancy), of Flint, Michigan; daughters, Anne (Mark), of Sawyer, Michigan and Leslie (Jeronimo), of San Diego, California; and ten grandchildren.
Bob was passionate about music and languages. He played violin, viola, piano and harmonica; he spoke Polish and Italian. He traveled to China, Poland, Austria and across the US and Canada. His interests included art, literature, nature and government; he loved a great spaghetti dinner.
Woodland Terrace was Bob's home for the last 4 years. He stayed busy with exercise and walks around the grounds, practicing viola and piano, and visiting with the many people he met. The family appreciates the outpouring of support from those that cared for our fine Dad. Cremation has taken place and the burial will be in Flint, Michigan this summer; Bob will be interred next to his dear wife Frances.
