Phil was born September 25, 1955 in Benton Harbor the son of R. Paul and Elaine (Heimbuch) Newman. Phil's educational background included St. Matthew's Lutheran Grade School, and Benton Harbor Junior and Senior High Schools. Phil started out into the business world at an early age of 15, working at Dog-n-Suds, then headed on to Rex Auto Parts in Benton Harbor. For more business background he sold Real Estate. Wanting to live in the big city and expand his horizons, he and his wife moved to Detroit where he was a pipe fitter for several years. Realizing that the big city wasn't for him and longing to get back to his roots he joined partnership with his brother, Paul, in a remodeling and residential construction business in the area. At the same time he became a licensed pilot. Along side working in the construction business for 15 years, he made investments in real estate. He also was an 18-year member of the Sons of the American Legion.
Phil was especially known for his great sense of humor. From early on he kept us laughing and smiling at his antics and funny remarks. And he did it so naturally. For a recent Halloween, Phil dressed up as a priest to the amazement and sheer delight of his friends and family. It was especially surprising because he was at a low time in his life, yet he brought laughter to others. Not known to many and amazingly, he enjoyed reading the encyclopedia from A-Z. Phil loved giving generous gifts to his friends and loved ones. He enjoyed his true friends and family and was truly loyal to them. He'll dearly be missed.
