Paul Cornwell

Paul Frederick Cornwell, 93, of St. Joseph passed away on Sunday, November 1, 2009 at Gilead Elder Care, St. Joseph.

Funeral services will be held 10 AM Wednesday, November 4, at Grace Lutheran Church, St. Joseph with Rev. Glenn Rosenbarm officiating. Friends may meet with the family from 6-8 PM Tuesday at Pike Funeral Home, Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Hwy., Bridgman. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be given to Grace Lutheran Church.

Paul was born May 17, 1916 in Boyd County, Kentucky and was raised by Osmond and Grace Workman in Muncie, Indiana. He served in the US Army during WWII. On May 1, 1941 he married the former Bertha E. Schultz. He retired from Whirlpool. Paul coached back to back state championship teams for Whirlpool in the Michigan State Class B Men’s Fast Pitch Softball League in 1952 and 1953. He was also instrumental in starting Little League in Benton Harbor in the early 1950's.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Bertha; one son, Derry (Kay) Cornwell of Bridgman; two grandchildren – Paul Robert (Ruth) Cornwell of Stevensville and Reegan Lyn (Phil) Albright of Niles; and four great grandchildren – Kaitlin, Kari, PJ, and Paige.

Paul was preceded in death by two brothers – Cecil and Harry; and one sister, Shirley.
