Maggie met her husband, Alex, on a ballroom dance floor. They were, as Alex said for rest of their 73 year marriage, a perfect fit. When this brave lady was 26 years old, she boarded an ocean liner alone with three small children, sailing to Canada to join her husband in Windsor, Ontario. There, she worked the night shift so she could be home with her kids all day. After immigrating to the United States, Maggie served as secretary to the principal of Bridgman High School until 1991. She loved the students, who nicknamed her “Boots” because she patrolled the hallways in knee-high black boots.
Maggie was a fun-loving woman who adored babies and children. Always eager to babysit her grandkids, she would devise games, sing nursery rhymes, or put on music to get everyone dancing.
Maggie gave back to her community by volunteering at the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, the Blossomtime Queens Committee, and Friends of New Troy Community Center.
Maggie kept her sweet nature even after Alzheimer’s began to rob her memory, but it broke her heart when she forgot a loved one’s name. The aides who cared for Maggie in the final years of her life grew to love her. Describing her, they all used the same word: adorable.
Maggie was adorable to everyone who knew her but to her family she was everything — the glue that held the family together. Her laughter, singing, dancing, charm, and grace will be missed by all.
To the end, Maggie was devoted to her 5 children, 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Maggie was preceded in death by parents, Patrick Kerr and Margaret (Taylor); siblings Mary (John) Mackay, Patsy (Chic) Farrell, Agnes (Tommy) Tierney, and great-great grandson, Otto Stern. She is survived by children Alexander, John, Lorraine (Terry) Hanover, Scott (Maggie), and Patrick; grandchildren Tara (Eric) Heiser, Gavin (Carol) Hanover, Cameron Hanover, Aaron (Sarah) Oman, Eric (Katie) Oman, April Oman, Julisia Oman, Konrad Oman, Keegan Oman, and Nicole Oman.
