Janet Schaefer

Janet M. Schaefer, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 1, 2020, at the Hanson Hospice Center, Stevensville, Michigan.

Janet was born in Chicago, Illinois, on Tuesday, June 26, 1937, the second of four children born to Stanley and Marie Zuppke. When the family moved to Lincoln Township, Michigan, in 1946, Janet attended North Lincoln Elementary School and St. Joseph Public High School, class of 1955.

Janet married Melvin E. Krieger on February 11, 1956. Their son, Freddy, was born in Germany in 1957, and their daughter, Laura, was born stateside in 1960. In 1976, Janet married Gerald J. Schaefer, who died in 2007. During her teens, Janet worked for Ritters Restaurant, St. Joe Auto Theatre, Murphy’s Dime Store and the phone company. Later in life, she worked for Krieger Plumbing, Memorial Hospital, Meijer and Harding’s laundromat. Janet was active in the Lakeshore Junior Chamber of Commerce and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School in Stevensville. She attended services at Grace Lutheran Church, St. Joseph and was currently a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Stevensville. She bowled in several leagues and attended many out-of-state bowling tournaments.

Janet was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Ted (Joni, Pat) Zuppke, her brother, Tom (Cheryl, Pat, Rena) Zuppke, and her grand daughter, Sonja Krieger, stillborn. She is survived by her sister, Marilyn (Tom, deceased) Kubath; her son, Freddy and his wife, Linda Krieger and their children Hans, Liesel, Hunter and Gretchen; her daughter, Laura (Lester, deceased) Wagemaker and their children, Rachelle, Nathaniel, and Timothy. Also surviving are six great grandchildren.
