Jack Gibson, Sr

Jack Peter Gibson Sr., 79, of Harbert passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at his home.

Funeral services will be held 11 AM Friday, September 19 at Pike Funeral Home, Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Hwy., Bridgman with Rev. Ron Magnuson officiating. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Friends may meet with the family from 6-8 PM on Thursday at the funeral home. Online condolences accepted at www.PikeFH.com.

Mr. Gibson was born November 30, 1928 in Lakeside the son of the late John and Mame (Riekert) Gibson. He was a 1946 graduate of Three Oaks High School where he was on the varsity basketball team and was a math whiz. He served his country during the Korean War with the #807 Engineers. He earned a degree in accounting at South Bend College of Commerce. He then was employed as an internal auditor for the businesses of Central West Oil, South Bend. Jack was then a licensed electrician and proud member of Local #153, South Bend. On May 21, 1966 he married the former Janice Kitchen in Chicago. Most of his life was devoted to serving his township. He served as a volunteer fireman for 43 years, 14 years as Fire Chief. He was also on the Chikaming Township Board for 39 years, Water and Sewer Board, an organizing member of the Galien River Sanitary District and served 20 years on the board. Most recently he served on the Safety Commission and Medic One. He was a member of the Stevensville American Legion Post 568. Jack enjoyed golf, concerts, plays, and travel. Over the years, he and his wife visited 27 countries and most of the United States. He was an avid sports fan – especially the Chicago Cubs, University of Michigan Football, and River Valley Soccer.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Janice; two sons – Jack (Rhonda) Gibson Jr. of Sawyer and William (Melissa) Gibson of Stevensville; four grandchildren – Joshua Gibson, Jordan Renee Gibson, Justin Gibson, and Joely Lynn Gibson; and a sister, Harriette Gibson of Harbert.

Jack was also preceded in death by three brothers – John Gibson, Harold Gibson, and William Gibson; and three sisters – Ann Thompson, Marilyn Gibson, and Sally Gibson.
