Eugene Bishop

Eugene M. Bishop, 81, of St. Joseph, left this world on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 to go to be with the Lord.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, February 27 at Pence-Reese Funeral Home, 310 N. 2nd Ave. E., Newton, Iowa. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery, Newton, Iowa. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be given to Hospice at Home.

Eugene was born April 30, 1928 in Newton, Iowa to Morris and Dolly (Benton) Bishop. He served our country in the United States Marine Corps. On July 24, 1948 he married the former Mary Evelyn Jones and they were married for 44 years. Gene retired from The Maytag Company where he worked as a Millwright. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Newton, Iowa and attended The Chapel in St. Joseph where he served on the Facilities Committee. He lived the past three years in St. Joseph after living most of his life in Newton.

Survivors include a daughter, Debra (Dale) Vander Heiden of St. Joseph; and two granddaughters – Jill (Adam) Hodge of Hattiesburg, Mississippi and Jodi (Chris) Miller of Salado, Texas. He is also survived by seven wonderful great grandchildren – Mac, Hank, and Stu Miller and Jebb, Landry, Ruthie, and Silas Hodge.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; step mother, Elma; his wife, Mary; and two brothers – Paul and Gerald Bishop.
