Donald Nelson

Mr. Nelson was born June 27, 1926, in Chicago, the son of the late Nels and Hildur (Freeman) Nelson. He received both his Bachelor of Science and Master's Degrees in Criminal Justice at Michigan State University and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On August 12, 1949, he married the former Lois N. Dahlin. Don served with the U.S. Secret Service in White House Detail guarding Presidents Truman and Eisenhower and Vice President Nixon. He became the Director of Security for Chicago and Northwestern, Penn Central, and Conrail Railroads. Don was also the Training Administrator for Guardsmark. He served as volunteer disaster coordinator for the American Red Cross in Chicago's Northwestern Suburbs. Don served in many churches throughout his life and was an active member of Harbert Community Church.

Survived By Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Lois; three children – Carol (Gerald) Nelson of Western Springs, Illinois, Barbara (Gregory) Sperry of St. Simons Island, Georgia, and Holly (Tim) O'Neil of Whitefield, New Hampshire; eight grandchildren – Jonathan (Kristin) Nelson, Christopher (Colleen) Nelson, Andrew Nelson, Susan Sperry, Steven Sperry, Daniel Sperry, Hannah O'Neil, and Sarah O'Neil; and three great granddaughters – Maggie, Bekah, and Anneka Nelson.
