Mr. Cortson was born April 17, 1928 in Missouri the son of the late Louis and Maud (Morgan) Cortson. On April 1, 1950 he married the former Shirley J. Binger and she preceded him in death on December 1, 2004. He worked at Litowich-Frick who won the Studebaker award of merit for three consecutive years as Dean was the service manager there. He then owned and operated Cortson's Pure Oil gas station. During this time he loved auto racing and he had his own #5 race car that he took to the local tracks in Millburg and Hartford. He was Chief Electrician for Bendix Corporation, President of the UAW Local 383 for many years and Financial Secretary and chairman for the Berrien-Cass-VanBuren Community Action Program of the UAW. After his retirement in 1993 he has worked as a delegate of the retired UAW members. He served on the Baroda Festival's Organ Donor 5-10K and Fun Run to support the Edward Heyn Scholarship Fund. He worked on the Organ Tissue Donation Stamp. He was a former Red Cross chairman in 1979 serving Berrien County for ten years. He was the United Way Co-Chairman for the Labor participation. He taught Electrical Current classes at Lake Michigan College for the Skilled Trades program. He served on the Democratic Party committee here in Berrien County for many years. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Stevensville.

Baroda, Michigan Dean is survived by five children – Michael (Rebecca) Cortson and Kim (John) Myers all of Bridgman, Lance (Kristie) Cortson of St. Joseph, Susan (David) Dubar of Benton Harbor, and Matthew (Margarita) Cortson of Brownsville, Texas; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and three sisters – Margaret (David) Rogers, Mildred (Marvin) Hanners and Wanda (Russell) Kirkendall.
Mr. Cortson was also preceded in death by two sisters – Maud Sneed and Delsey Jenkins; and a brother, Louie Cortson.
